Course Description:

AHC 141 Introduction to Phlebotomy ( 4 Semester Hours)

This Basic & Advance Blood Collection Techniques. The phlebotomist is an individual who collected specimens for laboratory testing. This course includes history, safety, equipment, Anatomy & Physiology, Phlebotomy Equipment, Phlebotomy Techniques & Procedures, 

It consists of laboratory training by professional laboratory personnel and develops skills for basic blood drawing, whether for health care professionals or those wishing to learn phlebotomy as a marketable entry-level laboratory skill.

This course is entirely online for students who are interested in earning their phlebotomy certification.

Course Description 4 credit hours + Clinical (Externship )

Topics covered in this course include the following:

1. Understanding the History of Phlebotomy: bloodletting, therapeutic phlebotomy, Laboratory Personnel, Hospital Departments, Laboratory testing

2. Safety in Phlebotomy: Medical Asepsis, Handwashing, Protective Personal Barriers, Hazardous Levels, OSHA/HIPAA laws, Infectious Control Procedures, Respirator Mask, etc

3.  A & P of Phlebotomy: circulatory system & Physiology  of the Heart

4: Phlebotomy Equipment: vacuum collection devices, syringes, capillary skin punctures, butterfly needles, throat swab, nasal swab, etc

5. Phlebotomy Technique:  Order of Draw,  Collection Blood Cultures, Urinalysis Collections (mid-stream, 24-Hour), 

6. Special Handling & Transport Specimens: Chilled Specimen, Amber Specimen, Urine Specimen, etc

7.  Pediatric Collection

8. Special Procedures: Heel Stick, Finger Stick, Peak & Trough Levels, Fasting, Syncope

9. Communication & Customer Services: How to Handle Clients in Different Settings, Patient Assessment, Pain Assessment, Customer Care
